General info
Large, picturesque town, 105 km north-east from Fort William, 165 km west from Aberdeen. All shops, restaurants etc. in the resort. Capital city of the Highlands, Inverness is situated on the River Ness which leads into the famous Loch Ness - home of the infamous illusive monster. It offers beautiful river walks, a sports centre, ice rink, museum, art gallery, castle, cathedral, 3 golf courses. Above the city lies Craig Phadrig, once the stronghold of Pictish Kings, with interesting forest walks and great views of the Moray Firth and its wildlife including bottlenose dolphins which can be seen from the shore or on trips available from harbours along the coast. Important centre for bagpipe players and lovers, every September the city hosts the Northern Meeting, the most prestigious solo piping competition in the world. Another major event in calendar is the annual Highland Games, which take place over 3 days in July. Activities: there are hiking and cycling paths to suit all interests, from serious mountaineering, hill walking and mountain biking to leisurely strolls around the city. Other outdoor activities include canoeing down the River Ness or the Caledonian Canal, rock climbing, gorge walking and quad biking. Historical and cultural attractions in the area include the large battlefield and visitor centre at Culloden, Urqhart Castle in Drumnadrochit, the historic Caledonian Canal and Clava Cairns, a fascinating archaeological site.
