Gravedona - Must-see attractions
Gallio Palace
In 1586, the Palazzo Gallio was built in the small town of Gravedona and continues to impress with its imposing architecture. Behind the massive walls, various halls from different eras can be admired. Concerts are regularly held on the ground floor. Particularly impressive is the main hall of the building, which spans two floors. Those who are lucky can attend one of the many events in this room. Other areas are now used by the local library.
Basilica of Saint Mary of the Lime Tree
The bell tower of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Tiglio with its octagonal spire is integrated into the stone facade. Elaborately carved bas-reliefs, hanging blind arches, columns, and arrow slits adorn the building made of Olcio stone and Musso marble. Next to it stands the noteworthy parish church of S. Vincenzo. The Basilica of Santa Maria del Tiglio was built on the remains of the old church of San Giovanni Battista. In the square interior, parts of a colorful mosaic floor, an underground baptismal font, and an old wooden crucifix still remind of the former baptistery.
Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie
The church and the former Augustinian monastery date back to 1467. Busts of prophets and saints adorn the facades. Through two marble portals, the visitor enters the interior with its richly illustrated chapels depicting biblical episodes of saints. Artistic frescoes from the 16th century adorn the bright interior of the church. The fresco of the Madonna Assunta from 1496 is famous. The monastery building, dissolved in 1771, now houses a library. Note the scenes from the life of Jesus in the cloister.
Pra' Castello Square
The Lombard town of Gravedona is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Como in Italy. During a walk through its old alleys, you will discover the Piazza Pra' Castello, the actual town center of Gravedona, alongside historical buildings. The tiny square, constructed from old castle walls, once encompassed numerous old buildings of Gravedona. It once served the parish church council's meetings, announced by the sound of bells. From here, enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Como and picturesque villages.
Beach of Gravedona
At the southern end of the municipality lies the beach of Gravedona at a river mouth. Shady trees and mountains border the crystal-clear turquoise water. Since it is a pebble beach, you should not forget to pack water shoes in your beach bag. Amenities such as a beach restaurant and public toilets provide comfort at the easily accessible beach of Gravedona. The small restaurants and cafes located on the waterfront road, as well as several ice cream parlors, enhance the bathing experience.
Villa Camilla
The Villa Camilla in Domaso near Gravedona is a charming 19th-century villa on the shores of Lake Como. Surrounded by a lush park, it offers a picturesque view of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The villa is a delightful example of Belle Époque architecture and today houses an art gallery that presents rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. Visitors can also enjoy the magnificent natural setting, making this villa a popular destination for art and nature lovers.
