Interhome offers all guests the option to make an additional voluntary climate protection contribution when making a booking. Your climate protection contribution supports the project "Peat bog restoration in La Gruère" in Switzerland or ‘Rewetting with Sphagnum Cultivation in the Gnarrenburger Moor’ in Germany. Together with our partner myclimate, we help reduce CO₂ emissions, promote biodiversity, and improve water management.
E-mobility is transforming our local operations. We are continuously changing to e-vehicules and/or hybrid cars. Our three local service offices in Belgium are using electric scooters and are 200% more efficient as a result. The scooters can carry blankets, towels and other small items and save time with easy parking. Another example of reducing car usage is our office in Halmstad in Sweden. The employees use an electric golf cart to drive between holiday homes.

Climate change and biodiversity Climate change is disrupting ecosystems and threatening biodiversity - the rich variety of life on Earth. As habitats shrink and species decline, natural attractions that draw travellers, such as coral reefs and wildlife areas, are also at risk. Tourism both depends on and impacts nature. By reducing emissions and supporting sustainable practices, the industry can help protect biodiversity and ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy our planet’s natural beauty.
Bees are vital for our planet’s balance. Since 2022 we have been creating 100,000 m² of flowering fields in Austria with our partner BEESark each year to protect bee populations and enhance biodiversity. These regional wildflower meadows capture CO₂, release oxygen, and provide essential habitats for rare species. Two groups of Interhome employees from different countries travelled to Carinthia by train to take part in a week dedicated to biodiversity and sustainability.
Together with our partner BEESark we learned about beekeeping and visited the large wildflower meadows, a vital habitat for bees and millions of other insects. Each year around 200 tons of CO₂. was saved and reduced through our initiative. In addition to learing more about bees, we helped prepare permaculture gardens and planted 50 young trees to promote diverse, climate-resilient forests. These initiatives reflect our commitment to protecting biodiversity and reducing carbon emissions.

Together with our partner BEESark, Interhome has launched a bird conservation project in Tyrol to help protect Austria’s endangered bird species - half of which are at risk of extinction. We’ve installed 1,065 nesting boxes on fruit trees across the region to create safe habitats for bird families. Each box is numbered, maintained, and monitored annually to ensure long-term success. This project reflects our commitment to expanding biodiversity and protecting nature for the future.
1. Do not waste drinking water. You can for example turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
2. Avoid unnecessary water consumption. Take a shower instead of a bath to save water
3. Fully load your appliances. Don't start your washing machine or dishwasher until you have a full load to wash.
4. Avoid excessive splashing and jumping in the pool. Water splashing outside the pool will evaporate.
5. Don't water the plants during the day. Watering plants at night prevents water from evaporating, plants take better advantage of the water and need less water overall.
6. Wash your car only when absolutely necessary. Use public car washes for this.
1. Use the air conditioning (if available) as little as possible. Do not forget to turn it off when doors or windows are open or when you leave the house or apartment.
2. Choose the right temperature. Please stay above 22 °C during summer and below 22 °C during winter.
3. Unplug unused appliances. Appliances such as coffee makers, toasters or laptops may continue to draw power even when turned off.
4. Use a clothesline or drying rack. Let the laundry air dry instead of using the tumble dryer.
5. Lights off! Don’t forget to turn off the lights when not required
1. Carry out shock ventilation. Ventilate several times a day with the window wide open, preferably through opposite windows ("draught"). Ventilate for 20-30 minutes in summer and 5-10 minutes in winter with the heating turned down.
2. Ventilate in case of water condensation. Always ventilate when water vapour is generated, e.g. when cooking, showering and drying laundry.
1. Use sun lotion with minerals instead of chemical filters. Mineral sunscreens are more skin-friendly and are also environmentally friendly. Chemical UV filters damage coral reefs by causing the death of the algae.
2. Use public transport or bicycles. Public transport emits less CO2 than cars. Cycling is even more environmentally friendly and promotes healthy living.
3. Souvenirs. Do not buy rare plant or animal products as souvenirs. Instead, go for local products such as wine, olive oil or honey.
4. Dispose of your waste properly. Take a waste bag with you and collect rubbish during your outdoor activities. Dispose of it properly to protect the environment.
5. Animal and plant life. Do not disturb or harm animals or plants. Observe animals from a safe distance and protect the environment by behaving responsibly.
6. Avoid fire hazards. Observe local fire regulations, use assigned fireplaces and extinguish the fire completely.
1. Plan meals ahead to avoid food waste. Use seasonal, locally available products and support the local economy.
2. Choose local products. Buy local food at farmers' markets or farm shops in the region, e.g free range eggs, vegetables or honey. Support the local farmers and environmentally friendly farming methods. Also explore street food offerings and try traditional dishes and taste the specialities of the region.
3. Do not waste food! Be aware of how much you cook or order in restaurants and take the leftovers with you.
4. Try plant-based or vegetarian meals on holiday. Check out plant-based or vegetarian dishes during your holiday and enjoy delicious options whilst reducing the environmental impact of meat production.
5. Choose the restaurants carefully. Look out for eco-friendly restaurants with local specialities and sustainable practices such as energy-efficient appliances, recycling and non-use of plastics.
The label is based on 24 strict criteria, including 100% renewable energy, 100% ecological heating systems, energy-efficient appliances, double-glazed windows, recycling, and key social and legal requirements. ECOmodation is designed around transparent, verifiable criteria and independent review, supporting credible sustainability communication in line with evolving EU consumer requirements.
Every certified holiday home undergoes 100% independent digital checks, complemented by regular audits and onsite inspections. Only accommodation meeting all criteria receive the ECOmodation label.
Together with the “Zentrum für nachhaltigen Tourismus” (Centre for Sustainable Tourism) at Eberswalde University, Interhome has developed ECOmodation, a sustainability label designed to become a trusted industry-wide standard for eco-conscious travellers.
The label is awarded by Austria-based ECOmodation GmbH, which reviews submitted property data, certifies properties that meet all criteria, and conducts ongoing monitoring and recertification.

The members of the Interhome Sustainability Team from across Europe spent a day volunteering in the Natural Areas of the Llobregat Delta, home to Catalonia’s stunning pine forests, dunes, and over 350 bird species. Working in the El Remolar lagoon and Filipines marsh, the team removed invasive plants like cacti to make room for native species such as sea holly and marram grass. In just three hours, they filled nine large bags of a total of 110 kg - an important step in preserving biodiversity and supporting habitat restoration.
Two days of hands-on climate commitment: Interhome staff from 11 local service offices along the Côte d’Azur and three purchasers joined forces to clean up beaches in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Cavalaire.
Despite the clean appearance of the beaches, the teams collected glass, many small plastic items, cigarette butts, styrofoam – even heavy iron grids – and received heartfelt thanks from passers-by. The initiative was complemented by a Climate Fresk workshop, helping participants better understand climate change and take meaningful action.

Interhome France is proud to support the initiative “Je pars, tu pars, il part” with a 3.000 EUR donation, giving low-income families the opportunity to enjoy a holiday stay, often for the very first time. Together, we’re creating places where everyone feels welcome.
Six Interhome Stockholm employees joined Hands2Ocean divers and volunteers to clean up Södermälarstrand in Stockholm – hauling an incredible 850 kg of waste from the water, including tires, batteries, and electronics. A huge thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves to protect the Stockholm waterways!
Every employee has the chance to take part in the Climate Fresk initiative - an interactive workshop that uses science-based discussions to explore the causes, impacts, and solutions to climate change.
