Further information on the country Turkey

Climate
Forms the Western part of Turkey. To the most part, the climate along the coast is Mediterranean (very warm and dry in summer and mild and rainy in winter). The interior experiences more of the country’s climate as it is colder in winter (rain, snow). “Izmir” (also known by it’s ancient name Smyrna) is the largest provincial city in this region with 3 million inhabitants. It is the third largest city in Turkey and has the second largest harbour after Istanbul. Izmir is 5000 years old. Other provinces include Aydin, Manisa, Afyon, Usak, Denizli, Mugla and Kutahya. This region has many greenhouses. Tobacco (50% of total production), cotton, grapes, figs, satsumas and olives are the characteristic products of this region. The textile industry is very well developed here particularly in Denizli. Especially in the interior of the region, rugs are woven by hand. There is a very large refinery in Izmir-Aliaga. Other developed sectors include the iron and steel, automobile, foodstuffs (olive oil, sugar) and ceramic/porcelain industries. As Izmir is one of the oldest towns in the world, there are many ancient sights to behold. The most important ancient towns like Ephesus, Pergamon, Miletus, Priene, Didyma and the Temples of Artemis and Apollo and 2 of the 7 Wonders of the World are to be found in this region. The unique white travertine terraces in Pamukkale, recognized as a natural wonder, are one of Turkey’s main attractions. Here, you can also view the ancient town of Hierapolis and bathe in the healing thermal waters. There are also several thermal baths in Afyon and Kutahya. The Aegean region is important for tourism because of its beautiful countryside and charming holiday resorts like Cesme, Foca, Gumuldur-Ozdere, Kusadasi, Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye. The Aegean is the most popular for the Turks because of its good climate and rich and varied hinterland, although the Antalya region is better known abroad.
