Travel Guide Alentejo

Further information on the country Portugal

Climate
Alentejo is an area marked by a mixture of Roman and Arab culture and evidence of more recent Christianity. To the northeast, stretches the pretty towns and cities which make up the “Rota dos Castelos” with Nisa, Castelo de Vide (hot springs), Marvao, Portalegre (famous for its tapestries) and Alter-do-Chao. More to the South the countryside is warmer and flatter: around Evora (one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, named a world heritage site by UNESCO), visit Monsaraz, Vila Vicosa, Extremos (marble area) and Arraiolos (home of the famous handmade rugs). Still further to the South, there are flat areas of olive groves and oak trees as well as reservoirs for lovers of water sports. Alvito, Beja (old Roman city which afterwards became the centre for the Moslem culture), Serpa and Mertola are places, which should not be missed. To the South East, the coastline welcomes visitors with its magnificent and unexplored Atlantic beaches. Alentejo is an excellent rural and ecological tourist area.
