Area on the border between Tuscany and Latium, La Maremma is an ancient land: here the Etruscans sculpted extraordinary cities out of tufa rock. Still today, the necropolis of Sovana is hidden in thick Mediterranean undergrowth. On this same tufa Medieval architects built splendid towns like Pitigliano. Maremma is a land with villages on hilltops like Magliano, Scansano and Montiano. The vineyards here produce the sweetness of Morellino wine. The hot baths of Saturnia were already known to the Etruscans and Romans. Little towns forgotten by time (Santa Fiora, Arcidosso, Castel Del Piano) surround the crater of the extinct volcano of Mount Amiata. The ruins at Vetulonia and the streets of Roselle are other exceptional Etruscan testimonies of Maremma.
Past the Colline Metallifere, cliffs announce Volterra, the superb heart of Tuscany. All of Volterra is history: here sea and mountains meet, alabaster is worked, agrarian culture and the art of Renaissance painters live together.
