Eating and Drinking

Eating and Drinking

It was said in the past that the British only eat to live (whereas the French live to eat)! However, this is no longer true with top quality restaurants and produce available now in all regions. Typical local dishes are available in every area from Cornish pasties and cream teas in the south to Whiskey and Haggis in Scotland. The British eat mainly meat, fish and vegetables. You will find the national dishes of “fish and chips” and “Sunday Roast” available everywhere. In particular you should try the delicious lamb from Wales and Aberdeen Angus beef from Scotland. As Great Britain is an island there is a huge choice of fish and seafood too. Indian and Chinese restaurants are extremely popular and very good value for money. There are also many Italian pasta and pizza restaurants, plus restaurants from all parts of the world. Pubs offer great value for money lunches too. The true pub is unique to Great Britain. They serve all kinds of spirits, wines and local beers (dark beers are served at room temperature, not cold). A small amount of wine is made in Great Britain but European and New World ones are the most popular and reasonably priced.

Travelling by Car

Travelling by Car

It is now extremely easy to reach Great Britain from Europe thanks to the Eurotunnel which transports cars and their passengers from Calais to Folkestone in just 30 minutes. There are also numerous car ferries connecting to Great Britain from France, Holland and Belgium. It’s extremely easy to get around by car thanks to the vast network of motorways (which are toll free) and other roads. The cities do become congested and a car is not necessary in the main cities such as London. The speed limit on motorways is 70 miles/hour (112 km/hour), 40 miles/hour (64 km/hour) on main roads and 30 miles/hour (48 km/hour) in built up areas. The alcohol limit is 0.8 pro mille. Pets are now allowed into Great Britain by ferry or Eurotunnel (not by air) provided they have the necessary requirements which, at the time of writing, consist of a pet passport, certificate and microchip implant.
