Dubbed 'The land of one hundred castles', lies this virgin part of Tuscany north-west of Versilia. The Lunigiana is a part of Tuscany still undiscovered by most tourists. Small, steep roads are winding through the hilly to mountainous landscape where, in lower levels Olive trees and vineyards are growing. Growing in chestnut forests is the main staple food of the local cuisine. Deer and wild boar inhabit the forests.
The landscape is changing from the flat and fertile valley of the Magra River to the deep and narrow valleys with tiny villages that sometimes even don't have shops or a restaurant. For shopping in Lunigiana, the best places are Villafranca or Bagnone.
Villafranca lies above the Magra River. Bagnone is an interesting larger town with wide roads, shady arcades with many small restaurants and cafés. Fivizzano is a small but busy market town with elegant Renaissance Palazzi. More towns worth visiting are Verrucola, a charming medieval town near Fivizzano. Ideal for hiking tours with beautiful views of the sea and the surroundings are Bastia and Cisigliana. Pontremoli is a town on the route between Genova and Parma and of special archeological interest: it hosts an unique collection of Menhirs and Statues.
