Travel Guide North/Oporto

Further information on the country Portugal

Climate
Porto is the most northern part of the country. Its historic roots can be traced back to the 12th Century, the time of the foundation of the Portuguese kingdom. This area, with its green, mountainous countryside, vineyards and pretty villages is one of the nicest in the country, although it does not attract too many tourists. It has numerous farming areas and small villages, where there are firm family values and a pride in their history. There is a lot of evidence all over the country of its different civilisations: Dolmens from the ice age as well as relics from the Celtic and Roman colonies. Some of the more interesting places are: Porto, the old town is named a protected site by UNESCO. The province of Minho far north, has many protected parks, isolated beaches and spa resorts which are well worth visiting. Other interesting places in this region are Viana do Castelo, the walled town of Valenca, Ponte de Lima, Braga, Guimares, Barcelos, etc., and not forgetting the Tras-os Monte region (beyond the mountains) with its peaceful villages.
