Situated in the Atlantic Ocean 545 km west of North Africa and 978 km south of Lisbon, Madeira is 741 km2. The island has 260,000 residents, 120,000 of whom live in the capital, Funchal. Madeira is a “Green Island” abundant vegetation, a wide range of trees and flowers, deserving the title of “floating garden”. Due to the gentle climate and warm winters, the island has numerous botanical species from subtropical areas. Madeira is an archipelago comprising 4 islands, Madeira, Porto Santo, Desertas and Selvagens but the last two are uninhabited.
The regional cuisine offers specialities such as swordfish (Espetadas), tuna accompanied by barbecued sweet corn and honey cakes. The most well know wines are the “Madeira” and the “Poncho”.
